Study Plan – Can I Become a Broadcaster with a Major in Chinese?

In this blog post, I will share my study plan, goals, and personal statement for becoming a broadcaster with a major in Chinese.

Reasons for Choosing This Major

I developed a dream of becoming a broadcaster while participating in the broadcasting club in middle school. Because I had such a strong interest in languages, I practiced speaking not only like Korean news anchors but also like foreign English-speaking anchors. People generally assume that to become a news anchor, one must major in journalism and broadcasting. However, I heard that these days, it is entirely possible to apply for open recruitment as a news anchor without majoring in journalism and broadcasting. Therefore, to become a news anchor better suited for a globalized world, I have decided to apply to the Department of Chinese Language and Literature at Handong University.

Academic Plan and Goals

I plan to major in Chinese. Given the recent trend of South Korea and China collaborating on numerous broadcast productions, I believe there will be a growing need for talent proficient in Chinese. As Korean culture is spreading widely in China on the back of the Hallyu wave, announcers fluent in foreign languages will be far more competitive. In this global village era, I aspire to become a global talent alongside South Korean broadcasters expanding into the world. I believe that your university, which is laying the groundwork to reach out to the world under the motto “Top in the Nation, Top in Science, Top in the World,” will help me achieve my dream. I hope that it will serve as the first stepping stone for me to become a talent capable of reaching out to the world.
During my first and second years, I will focus entirely on my major. Since I have not studied Chinese before, I believe I must first solidify the foundation of my major. After that, I plan to study Journalism and Broadcasting as a double major or a minor. Since Journalism and Broadcasting is a field that covers the media industry as a whole, I believe it is essential to study it at least once to become an announcer.
During my junior and senior years, I plan to participate in a short-term language study program in China and will strive to obtain the HSK certification through a language institute. In particular, I will focus on developing the ability to speak fluently and without hesitation. In addition to my major studies, my plan is to join the campus broadcasting station. I believe joining the station will help me gain practical experience, and I expect my interpersonal skills to improve through interactions with seniors and juniors.
Since I believe an announcer must also be well-versed in current affairs, I plan to participate in a current affairs club. Cultivating an interest in and the ability to analyze current issues while still a college student will be of great help when I eventually become an announcer. Looking at these plans, I realize that my college life will be very busy and challenging. However, it would be difficult to navigate the world without a spirit of challenge and ambition. I will strive to be a young person who always lives with hope.

Plans After Graduation

First, I will start by meeting all the qualifications required to work as an announcer. I plan to enroll in an announcer academy to receive intensive training. I will prepare by mastering the basics one by one, starting with vocal projection and posture. I also think joining a study group of aspiring announcers to prepare together would be a good approach. I also intend to pass the KBS Korean Language Proficiency Test and diligently complete the preparatory process required to become a news anchor. I’ve heard that becoming a news anchor is by no means easy. I’ve even heard that some people fail the exam more than twenty times. However, there are many who have become news anchors today by never giving up and continuing to challenge themselves. Like them, I am prepared to pursue my dream without getting discouraged. Once I become an announcer, I plan to seek opportunities to engage in more global activities. I intend to devote myself to my studies while dreaming of the big stage I will one day stand on.

Self-Introduction

I enjoy being in front of people and talking with them. That’s why I naturally developed a strong interest in languages.
The reason I have always been interested in foreign languages as well as Korean is that the more languages I know, the more people I can meet. Being able to talk to people from other countries means being able to share ideas. The act of people meeting and exchanging thoughts is truly wonderful, and language is essential for making that happen. I believe I have a natural aptitude for speaking, as well as for learning and mastering languages. Conveying information to others, listening to their stories, and empathizing with them—all of these actions are carried out through language. That is why I often reflect on just how wonderful and magnificent language truly is. As I began to dream of becoming a news anchor, I developed a desire to communicate with as many people as possible. I am well aware that choosing a new language and learning it from scratch will be difficult. However, I believe that my passion for conveying and listening to stories from various people will turn even this seemingly impossible dream into reality.
